Just before Christmas we were on the west coast of Florida visiting family. I went out one morning to catch the sunrise at a fishing pier in Matlacha (pronounced MATT-la-SHAY), a funky combination of fishing village and artist colony near Ft. Myers. (It's the Florida equivalent of Madrid, NM, if you've ever been there.)
The sky was beginning to lighten and the pier was deserted . . .
except for a lone bird (not sure what kind) . . .
The sunrise wasn't all that great, but as a photographer I work with what the Universe provides . . .
In the quiet of the dawn, squadrons of pelicans flew silently toward me . . .
As the sun began to burn through the clouds at the horizon, the boaters/fishermen came along . . .
Leaving the pier, I made two images -- a vertical and a horizontal, as I almost always do . . .

love the shots, you captured the spirit of the place well, and the first funky shack shot (with the wires) and the 2 men hanging around are my favorite. Surprisingly, I like the horizontal view of the pier the best, as the tree and sides seem to bring my eye in more to the pier, while the vertical leads me up and away from it. I think I just learned something from this comparison. Despite the fact I read Hebrew as a kid (right to left), I suggest a horizontal flip of the boat pics, etc., so that the eye follows the image from left to right.
